Description
This composition evolved out of my last visit to the South of France where I was inspired by the work of Matisse. During my stay at a lovely hotel, I couldn't help but remember how Matisse changed his painting technique during a summer in Mediterranean village when he produced his major works Open Window and Woman with a Hat in 1905. He found his style and began to paint with bright colors and strong brush strokes.
As I sat in the restaurant gazing out at the Bay of Nice, I imagined what it would be like to have a conversation with Matisse, to learn about how he saw the world and his use of color and form. I then thought about how my surroundings would be transformed if Matisse were to paint this scene. He would use his signature elements of saturated colors, a flattened pictorial space, limited detail and strong outlines. The woman would be surrounded by bright hues of orange and yellow with patterns and designs in fabric, clothes and carpet.
Now imagine yourself joining her and Matisse, deciding what to choose from the menu, watching the sailboats catching a breeze and a village of white buildings reflecting the sunlight on the distant shore.
